Port Committed to Cleaner Air
By Jim Newsome, president and CEO of the South Carolina State Ports Authority

Protecting the natural environment is of the utmost importance here in South Carolina, especially within the maritime community. The port’s “Pledge for Growth” initiative demonstrates the maritime industry’s commitment to improving and enhancing the region’s air quality, water quality, land resources and communities.

While port-related emissions represent only about one percent of the Tri-County’s total fine particulate matter pollutants, members of the port community – including the Ports Authority and its tenants, harbor pilots, tugs, truckers and others – have been proactively and voluntarily partnering to reduce air impacts from diesel engines on the terminal, over the road and in our waterways.

These collaborative projects have proven extremely successful. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved projects totaling more than $5 million in federal and local matching funds to the Ports Authority and its partners to replace older engines in 60 pieces of port lifting equipment and watercraft, as well as a popular truck rebate program to reduce emissions.
