Annual Summit Registration Deadline This Week
This is the last week to register for the 30th Annual Summit, presented by Milliken & Company. Don't miss your opportunity to network with hundreds of business leaders at the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce’s most high profile event of the year. The Summit is at Wild Dunes on the Isle of Palms November 12. The business community will unite to honor leaders who are making a difference in South Carolina, including South Carolina's 25 Fastest-Growing Companies, the Business Leader of the Year and the Public Servant of the Year. In addition, Richard Karlgaard, the publisher of Forbes magazine, will serve as keynote speaker. South Carolina Chamber Honors Diversity Award Winners
The South Carolina Chamber of Commerce and the South Carolina Diversity Council recognized the state’s top companies in the field of diversity at the 5th Annual South Carolina Excellence in Workplace Diversity Awards in Columbia. In the small employer category, the 2009 Excellence in Workplace Diversity Award was presented to Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP. The company focuses on recruiting and retaining women and minority lawyers through a number of special initiatives. In the medium employer category, the 2009 Excellence in Workplace Diversity Award went to Goodwill Industries of Lower South Carolina, one of the largest employers in the state of individuals with disabilities. In the large employer category, the 2009 Excellence in Workplace Diversity Award was awarded to Savannah River Nuclear Solutions LLC. SRNS has a Diversity Board of Directors (DBOD) comprised of 16 internal employees and five external community business leaders.

Other Diversity Award Nominees included AnMed Health, Bon Secours St. Francis Health System, Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center, Nationwide Insurance Company, U.S. Engine Valve, Wilbur Smith Associates and Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice PLLC. Click here to learn more.

The South Carolina Chamber of Commerce has a new and improved HR Institute. In these challenging times, professional development opportunities can be difficult yet necessary for career growth. That's why staying up-to-date with the ever-changing HR laws and regulations is more important than ever. During the HR Institute, you will learn the most recent changes in workplace legislation, which will give you the knowledge that can protect your organization.

Module 2 will cover important topics, such as model employee policies, workplace immigration, HR file cabinet as well as a SPHR overview. This Module has been pre-approved for 12.5 recertification credit hours toward PHR, SPHR and GPHR recertification through the HR Certification Institute.

Make Workplace Safety a Priority
Don’t miss this opportunity to enhance your workplace safety initiatives by registering for one or both workshops set for December 10 and 11 in Columbia. PIT/Forklift Training, a one-day workshop detailing general safety, operation, training and guidelines for operating a PIT (Powered Industrial Truck) or forklift, will be offered December 10. The December 11 half-day workshop, ARC Flash/NFPA 70E, will cover the NFPA 70E “Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace” guidelines while giving all participants a working knowledge of how to apply these guidelines.

Businesses Honored at 2009 Governor's Quality Award Conference
The 2009 Governor’s Quality Award Conference, held October 21 in Columbia, proved to be a sterling success. State Senator Vincent Sheheen shared his view for economic growth in South Carolina as well as recognized and presented Silver Achiever Awards to Self Regional Healthcare and Charleston Water System. Special guest presentations were made by Principal Stephanie Reese, fourth grade student Jacob House and fifth grade student Parker Sutton on how they use the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence in the classroom at Ellen Woodside Elementary School in Greenville. Congratulations to this year's award-winners!
