Welcome to this issue of the South Carolina Diversity Council’s electronic newsletter. Produced by the Council in cooperation with the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, this newsletter seeks to increase awareness of diversity issues in the workplace and provide a wide array of tools and “best practices” to assist companies in their own diversity initiatives.

The mission of the South Carolina Diversity Council is to encourage, support and educate business and industry leaders as they seek to value and strengthen diversity in the workplace.

Diversity is.  Diversity exists.  Each day we deal with diversity issues, but it is how we not only manage but leverage these issues that define us and ultimately leads to our success.  Webster defines “diversity” as the instance or point of difference or the condition of being different.

JOB HUNTING IN CYBERSPACE - DIVERSITY OR DISASTER?

EEOC Chair Naomi Earp cautioned attendees at a recent seminar in Hampton, Virginia that the agency’s E-RACE initiative, which focuses on eliminating race and color discrimination in the workplace, has recognized that some of the new technologies used in job searches may raise discrimination concerns.

CLEARING OPPORTUNITIES TO PATHWAYS FOR ALL

As our communities become more diverse and as globalization begins to impact business at every level, corporate and community leaders are realizing the importance of diversity management and promotion. The Diversity Leadership Academy, which began with an inaugural class in Columbia this fall, promises to help shape discussions about diversity in the Midlands.

3rd ANNUAL DIVERSITY APPRECIATION NIGHT 
Embassy Suites, Columbia

Hosted by the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the South Carolina Diversity Council, the awards event begins with a reception at 5:30 p.m.  The dinner, beginning at 6:30 p.m., will culminate with the presentation of the award for the 2007 Excellence in Workplace Diversity Award. The state's top companies and organizations in fields of diversity will be recognized during the evening.  Nominees include Bon Secours St. Francis Health System Inc., First Sun Employee Assistance Program Alliance Inc., Sonoco, U.S. Engine Valve, Verizon Wireless, Wackenhut Services Inc., and Washington Savannah River Company.
