COURT RULES TAX ON GROCERS CONSTITUTIONAL

In a 6-1 decision this week, the Ohio Supreme Court ruled that assessing the state’s new commercial activity tax (CAT) on the gross receipts of Ohio grocers is constitutional.

HOUSE PASSES SEXUAL ORIENTATION BILL

In one of its first actions following a short summer recess, the Ohio House passed a bill that adds two new protected classes to Ohio’s civil rights laws.

OHIO TO PURCHASE MORE BIOBASED PRODUCTS

Ohio is moving toward implementing a federal biobased purchasing program.

House Republicans have selected Peter A. Beck to replace Shannon Jones in the southwestern Ohio 67^th House District. Jones was appointed to the Ohio Senate in August to replace the late Senator Bob Schuler.

Beck is an accountant and served on Mason City Council, in Warren County, from 1999-2003 and most recently as Mason’s vice-mayor. He is expected to be sworn into the Ohio House next week.
