STATE BUDGET UPDATE

The Senate’s version of the state budget is scheduled to be released today, Friday, May 29. It is expected to be $1 billion less than the version passed by the House and include additional money for education. Once the Senate version of the budget is available, an overview of provisions affecting Ohio businesses will be posted on the Ohio Chamber’s Web site.

TEMPORARY HEALTH INSURANCE EXTENSION MAY BE MADE PERMANENT

In April the Ohio Chamber supported a temporary change to the state law that requires employers to provide six months of health insurance coverage to employees who are involuntarily terminated.

SMALL BILLS – BIG PROBLEMS

While most attention remains on the state budget, several other bills are being heard by lawmakers that create greater regulatory burdens and decrease flexibility for Ohio employers.

Rep. Robin Belcher was selected by House Democrats this week to replace Eugene Miller in the 10th House district.  She is an attorney who has worked in the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s office and for the Cleveland Jobs Corps.  Rep. Belcher also served as a law clerk in Columbia, Missouri’s law department.
