"I have worked closely with the U.S. Air Force for many years on several research projects," said Tomblin. "To be accepted into the McConnell family is a unique opportunity and a great honor."
As Honorary Commanders, Tomblin and Widener will serve for two years by participating in a variety of activities sponsored by their units.
"I'm really honored to be a part of Team McConnell and to be able to show my support for our service men and women in a tangible way," said Widener.
According to McConnell AFB, the purpose of the honorary commanders program is to provide an interactive learning experience to increase public awareness and understanding of the armed forces and the mission, policies and programs of the Air Force by affording influential civilians the opportunity to get an up-close and personal look at McConnell Air Force Base and the Air Force. Each civic leader is paired with a McConnell AFB commander and invited to participate in a variety of activities held on base.
"The Honorary Commander program increases our ability to spread the word to our host communities about Team McConnell's mission," said Col. Vechery.
The National Institute for Aviation Research is a prestigious state-of-the-art aerospace research and development laboratory with global reach and expertise in research, design, testing, and certification. The Institute’s clientele includes many of the world’s aerospace manufacturers, NASA and the FAA. It is the largest aviation R&D academic institution in America. The National Institute for Aviation Research is an unincorporated division of Wichita State University.
