NCAMP portal site triples its membership

As a testament to the amount of support and interest in NCAMP and its activities, the NCAMP portal has grown to more than 150 members since its January inception.

A valuable resource for sharing documents with its industry partners, the portal hosts draft documents such as material property and statistical analysis data reports and material and process specifications prior to final publication. It also includes a schedule of NCAMP activities and estimated report release dates.

The NCAMP portal currently has draft Qualification Material Property Data Reports available for the following material systems:

  • ACG MTM45-1 PWC2 G30-500 3K Plain Weave
  • ACG MTM45-1 6781 S2 Glass Revision N/C
  • ACG MTM45-1 12K IM7 Unidirectional Revision N/C

New draft releases of the IM7 and PWC2 Qualification Material Property Data reports are scheduled in the coming weeks, along with the Qualification Statistical Analysis Report of the ACG IM7, PWC2 and 6781 glass.

The NCAMP portal increased from a mere 50 members to more than 150 in February after the announcement was made in the last NCAMP Bulletin.

Information contained on the portal is available to the public at no charge, although users are required to complete a free online registration form. Registering allows NCAMP to communicate with users on any updates to the portal, including new data posted or changes made to existing documents. Register online at https://www.niar.wichita.edu/NCAMPPortal/. For more information or questions, contact Kristin Marlett at (316) 978-6958 or 1 (800) NIAR-WSU.

Kimber Lemon, an NCAMP technician since August 2005, has accepted a cooperative education position in the Dynamics and Controls division. Lemon graduates in May 2009 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering and will be attending WSU for her master’s degree in aerospace engineering in the fall of 2009.

James Winkel, a quality assurance technician with NCAMP since September 2007, has accepted a cooperative education position with the Advanced Fluids Division.

Since its establishment, NCAMP has grown from two lab technicians to six and also employs two graduate research assistants.

The National Center for Advanced Materials Performance is located at the National Institute for Aviation Research at Wichita State University. NCAMP began from the NASA AGATE shared composite material property database program. NCAMP’s goal is to take the composites industry to a self-regulating level similar to that achieved by the metals industry. This involves working with industry organizations such as the Composite Materials Handbook 17 on data archival, the American Society for Testing and Materials D30 committee on composite test methods, the Society of Automotive Engineers on aerospace material specification development, the Performance Review Institute on product assessment and certification and Nadcap on audit criteria; all aiming at creating a framework covering material property data acquisition, qualification and property control that will be acceptable to the FAA and Department of Defense. This framework must be self-sustaining, both financially and technically, while being managed by the aforementioned non-profit organizations with minimal FAA and DoD oversight. This ambitious goal requires a strong level of support and participation from industry and government.
