NIAR 2006 Annual Report is available online

The 2006 Annual Report forWichita State University’s National Institute for Aviation Research is now available on the NIAR website.

The annual report provides information about laboratory and center of excellence projects and events for the 2006 fiscal year as well as NIAR’s general budget information.

With overviews, activities and contact information for each laboratory and center of excellence, the NIAR Annual Report is one the best resources for researching NIAR. Download the report online now at: http://www.niar.wichita.edu/media/arindex.asp.

NIAR labs perform "Crashworthiness of Transit Buses" study

The National Institute for Aviation Research at Wichita State University is currently performing studies in its Computational Mechanics, Virtual Reality and Crash Dynamics Laboratories to provide information to the Federal Transit Authority on the performance of mass transit buses in crashes.

The study, which is being performed by NIAR Research Scientist Dr. Gerardo Olivares and his team, is the first attempt to measure mass transit bus crash dynamics and how bus design affects crash forces that cause injuries to occupants.

For this study the Computational Mechanics Lab is performing finite element engineering analysis of crashes to better understand how crash forces are transmitted to passengers. The VirtualRealityCenter is being used to graphically describe crash effects. And the Crash Dynamics Lab is performing passenger sled tests for typical frontal, side and rear impact configurations and driver sled tests for typical frontal impact configurations.

Future research in this study will include the proposal of bus interior design guidelines to reduce occupant injuries, design of a child restraint system for buses and evaluation of the performance of wheel chair anchors.
