"Trying to marginally reform the current system gets us nowhere. My prediction is that we are going to have four to seven times as much new science in the next 25 years that we had in the last 25 years. Sixty-five percent of that is going to come from outside the United States. If we don't fundamentally reshape our system to be capable of absorbing that new knowledge, we will fail. This is not marginal change. This is life and death."

Missouri effort against 'card check' approved in committee

House Joint Resolution 37, filed by Rep. Mike Cunningham, a Republican from Rogersville, would allow Missouri voters to decide whether to alter the state’s constitution with language protecting secret ballot elections.


Economic development effort again blocked from reaching vote

A number of critical economic development measures remained stuck in a Senate logjam this week. The measures are part of House Bill 191, sponsored by Rep. Tim Flook, a Republican from Liberty.

Power plant legislation pulled from Senate floor after long discussion

Senate Bill 228, sponsored by Sen. Delbert Scott, would give utilities a new financing option to help cover power plant pre-construction costs. The bill will need more compromises to make it out of the Missouri Senate. 



Budget bills voted out of Senate committee
With the Missouri General Assembly progressing toward passage of the Fiscal Year 2010 budget, several budget items important to Missouri businesses are closer to being finalized. 


House committee vote seeks to expand UI borrowing capacity

While the unemployment benefits fund could go up to $1 billion in the red, the state can only borrow up to $450 million from private sources.
