Letter from
The M.B Swayze
Chair

Robin Robinson
(LM 1988-89)

,

The excitement around Leadership Mississippi continues to grow.

In the past three years, the program has made great strides and there is now more interest than ever in Leadership Mississippi.

As a result, we have seen a big increase in both nominations for the program and applications. Thanks to the interest and involvement of alumni, we had over 150 nominations for the 2010-11 class and more than 80 applications. We appreciate your involvement in promoting Leadership Mississippi. The increase in nominations and applications is a direct result of your support.

There are numerous ways for you to continue to be involved. The current Leadership Class is working to help promote Mississippi Scholars, a program the Public Education Forum of Mississippi uses to reach out to high school students across the state and encourage them to take a more rigorous course of study. The current class is also working to build momentum of Mississippi Building Blocks, a privately-funded initiative to improve early childhood education statewide.

Leadership Mississippi alumni are also stepping up as we expand The Path Forward program. Thanks to those of you who have already sent your dues for this year and if you haven't done so, please send the dues as soon as possible. It is a small amount to help ensure a big return for our state.

Again thank you for your continued support of this program and thanks for being a leader for Mississippi.

Robin Robinson

Chair, M.B Swayze Education Foundation

Winter-Reed award
given to Grace for work
on early childhood education

Dr. Cathy Grace stands with (from left) Governor William Winter,
Past MEC Chair Jack Reed Sr. and MSU's Marty Wiseman.

Leadership Mississippi alum Dr. Cathy Grace (LM 1982-83) was presented the 2009 Winter-Reed Partnership in recognition of her commitment to improving education in Mississippi. The award was given on Sept. 21 at the Winter-Reed Partnership in Education program to be held at Mississippi State University.

Dr. Grace played a key role in Mississippi’s statewide implementation of kindergarten, which was strongly supported by Leadership Mississippi. When Mississippi became the last state in the country to require school districts to offer kindergarten in 1985, Dr. Grace headed the initiative as early childhood coordinator for the state Department of Education.

At Mississippi State University, Dr. Grace is a professor in the Department of Curriculum,  Instruction and Special Education of the College of Education and director of its Early Childhood Institute. She is currently on sabbatical to serve as director of Early Childhood Development Policy for the Children's Defense Fund. Dr. Grace has taught at the university level, been executive director of a regional professional development association for early childhood educators, and created and directed a comprehensive family support agency for Lee County.

For more than 40 years, Gov. William Winter and Jack Reed Sr. have been driving forces on behalf of public education in Mississippi. In recent years, they have united in a bi-partisan front to promote the need for quality education and consistent, adequate funding of our public education system.

The Mississippi Association of Partners in Education in 2007 established a perpetual award in their names to be presented annually to promote the ideals and partnership exemplified by their lifelong commitment to education. Since 1984, the Mississippi Association of Partners in Education, a 501 (c)(3), has served as a statewide network of educators and community partners.

Class finishes Cleveland stop;
heads to Olive Branch
for final 2009 session

Participants listen to a presentation by Dr. Wells in Cleveland.

The 2009-10 Leadership Mississippi class will wrap up their Leadership Mississippi experience with a final session in Olive Branch that will focus on Quality of Life on November 12-13.

Next year's class will travel to Jackson, Oxford, Biloxi, Greenwood and Natchez.

Alumni Investment
vital in building strong
Leadership Mississippi

With the sucessful repositioning of Leadership Mississippi as a growing program, we have renewed our investment program for alumni. We have already collected over $8,000 from alumni. We thank those who have already given to this fantastic program and encourage others to continue their participation through a dues contribution. We want to maintain this high quality program and truly need your help to do that.

If you still list MEC’s Leadership Mississippi on your resume, if you still nominate colleagues for the program and if you are reading this e-newsletter, Leadership Mississippi clearly has a place in your heart. Please support Leadership Mississippi by sending your contribution in dues to help further this program.

The annual Leadership Mississippi dues contribution is $100. Make checks payable to Leadership Mississippi, P.O. Box 23276, Jackson, MS 39225-3276.
