Regional Events

Leadership Florida hosted its inaugural statewide Volunteer Day on March 14, 2009. Take a look at the photos below to see the impact these regions made.

The Calusa Region, chaired by Pam Truitt, hosted a double-duty event recently which included a tour of the impressive new downtown Sarasota headquarters of Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida, co-hosted by CEO Barbara Zdravecky (XVII) and Debra Jacobs (X).

The building is a true LF Calusa collaboration - with Architect Javi Suarez (XXVII) on the design, General Contractor Ron Allen (XV) creating the structure, trim and details, and Darrell Turner (XXIII) adding the natural outdoors with landscaping skill.

Time magazine called New Orleans the nation's "greatest education lab" in 2007; a year later The New York Times magazine featured the post-Katrina classroom saying New Orleans is "an educational landscape unlike any other." Leadership Florida member and former Broward County teacher of the year, Brian Dassler, works in the middle of it all. Brian and his colleague, Michael Feinberg, founder of KIPP, will share their vision for a college- and career-preparatory high school education that inspires and prepares students for the 21st century and discuss the policy shifts at the state and local levels which have provided the necessary foundation for the full recovery of New Orleans schools.

Class XXVII Travels to the Capital City

The recent Tallahassee class session was great and exceeded my expectations – which have been set high by previous sessions. Hearing directly from our University Presidents about the challenges brought on by Florida’s budget issues was informative. CFO Alex Sink demonstrated her leadership skills at our lunch and our Governor made us feel welcome in the ”Peoples House.” However, the real highlight was Arch Lustberg. His lessons on communication were well received by the class, even though a few of us demonstrated our need for more training!

President & CEO, Florida Press Association
