College Leadership Florida brings Florida into focus for our most talented student leaders, preparing them to use their knowledge and leadership skills to benefit the state. Only the second program of its kind in the country, College Leadership Florida is a collaboration between Leadership Florida and the Florida High Tech Corridor Council, an economic development initiative of the University of Florida, University of Central Florida and the University of South Florida. |
College Leadership Florida combines three unique elements: |
a week-long curriculum that includes issues education and leadership assessment and training; a community service component of 30 hours; a personal mentorship for each participant by a Leadership Florida member.
|
Participants: The class is comprised of 40 juniors and seniors from among 30 public and private colleges and universities throughout the state. Participants have a wide range of majors and they are selected through an application process that requires a demonstration of involvement in their communities and educational institutions. |
Program: Over a seven-day period, students are exposed to many societal and economic issues facing the state in order to stimulate inquiry, analysis, personal development, and a commitment to Florida. The curriculum provides an enhanced understanding of the state, public policy, leadership, communication, community service and technology. It features lectures and symposia by noted government, business and community leaders, and professional educators. It also includes on-site visits, small discussion groups and leadership development sessions. |
Impact: Each student is assigned a mentor who is a graduate of Leadership Florida. The mentors provide professional and personal guidance to students over a period of one year and these relationships are often sustained long after the program has been completed. The service project and exposure to issues connect students to the state, boding well for the retention of these young men and women who are the future leaders of Florida. |

The budget cuts at Florida's state universities that we've all been reading about have troubling implications for one of Leadership Florida's most important programs. Private universities are also facing financial difficulties in the current economy. And, it may be that the top student leaders from your alma mater or favorite Florida school might not be able to attend College Leadership Florida this August. |
Due to budget cutbacks, we still need to raise at least $18,000 to support the CLF program. We'd like to raise even more to provide additional need-based scholarship support to these worthy students. What better way to do this than a little friendly Leadership Florida competition? |
