Florida Alliance for Arts Education
SURVEY

Lawrie Platt Hall (VI) would appreciate your participation in the Arts for a Complete Education/ Florida Alliance for Arts Education (ACE/FAAE) survey outlined below…

What value do you place on the arts and arts education: music, theatre, the visual arts, dance and creative writing for economic development – for student engagement and learning – for residents’ quality of life? Does your business, organization or governmental entity offer programs that encourage engagement in the arts (or has it offered them in the recent past) and would you be willing to have information about them shared on a statewide data base? These are the questions Arts for a Complete Education/ Florida Alliance for Arts Education (ACE/FAAE) is probing in a short online survey and needs your assistance.

To learn more or to participate in this survey research, please visit www.faae.org and click on Learning and Wellness Through the ARTS on the left index no later than April 16.

Findings will be presented at four forums titled Winning Strategies in Business, the Social Services, Healthcare, and Juvenile Justice: ARTS IN ACTION in May, to be held in Orlando, Sarasota, West Palm Beach and Panama City. The arts programs identified through the surveys and other research will be made available at www.faae.org and the Florida Department of State Web site.

ACE/FAAE is a non-profit organization founded in 1989 to unite educators, artists, community leaders, concerned citizens, arts education organizations, arts institutions and corporate partners in support of arts education. The survey is funded as part of a Florida Department of State Division of Cultural Affairs (DCA) and Florida Arts Council grant to advance the arts education elements of DCA’s 10-year Strategic Plan, Culture Builds Florida’s Future.

Sunshine in the Dark: Florida in the Movies

Friday, June 27th, 1:45 - 3:00pm
Presented By the Florida Humanities Council's: Robert Ingalls & Susan Fernandez

The images of Florida, Floridians and tourists that have appeared in major studio and independent films have helped shape opinions of the state and its people. Fernandez and Ingalls highlight the central plots, environmental settings and

characters in movies with Florida themes using film clips, stills and publicity posters. They show how depictions of Florida have changed in more than 300 films over the last century.

Co-Presenter Robert P. Ingalls is Professor of History at the University of South Florida, where he has taught U.S. history since 1974. Since moving to Florida from New York, where he received his Ph.D. from Columbia University, he has written primarily about various aspects of Tampa history.

Ingalls' book Urban Vigilantism in the New South: Tampa, 1882-1936 (University Press of Florida) examines forms of violence, including lynching, which Tampans used against African-Americans, immigrants, radicals, union organizers, and others who were considered threats. He is also co-author of Tampa Cigar Workers: A Pictorial History (University Press of Florida), which chronicles the city's immigrant community from the 1880s to the present, and Sunshine in the Dark: Florida in Films (University Press of Florida), which looks at how filmmakers have portrayed the state and its people. In addition to writing and teaching, Ingalls has served as managing editor of Tampa Bay History for twenty years. He resides in St. Petersburg.

Co-Presenter Susan Fernandez migrated to Florida from Kentucky with her family in 1959. She earned her Ph.D. in History from the University of Florida and specializes in Caribbean History with an emphasis on Cuba.
Fernandez taught at junior and private colleges, as well as in the State University system of New York before settling in St. Petersburg and becoming a professor at the University of South Florida-St. Petersburg. She has led seminars in Florida history for the Florida Humanities Council, and maintains an interest in the social history of the state. Her prior publications include articles on Cuban history and a book on the colonial period. Fernandez is currently researching the history of the Cuban lottery and bolita and their connections to Florida gambling.
