Senate Vote to Eliminate Secret Ballots on Union Elections Nears
Please Contact Sens. McCulsky and Cardin and urge a ‘down vote’
Legislation that would make it easier for union organizers to intimidate and bully workers into joining a union is expected to be considered by the Senate this week. Ironically entitled the Employee Free Choice Act, the bill was approved earlier this year in the House in a vote that went strictly along party lines. Currently, the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) allows employees to decide whether they wish to be represented by a particular union through a federally supervised private ballot election process.
Attached is a suggested letter we are urging our members to use to contact their senator (click here). Just copy it onto your letter head and mail. Of, if you prefer, you can email.
Can your letter persuade Maryland’s very liberal senators to vote down labor’s most prized legislation? The question, of course, is rhetorical. Moreover, the unions know they don’t have the support to pass the bill this year. They also know that in the unlikely event the bill does pass in the Senate, the president would promptly veto.
So why go to all of this trouble?
Organized labor’s real goal this year is to soften opposition so that in 2009, should there be a president in the White House more favorably disposed to organized labor then the one who sits there now, they will have greatly increased their chances of success. The number of letters supporting the legislation right now outnumbers letters opposed by almost 20 to 1! Our senators need to know where business stands on this issue.

98 Rock & ‘Kid’s Chance’ Joins Sunbelt, Hilte Tools & ABC for Equipment Rodeo
ABC is pleased to welcome Baltimore’s number one station, 98 Rock, to the Equipment Rodeo team. The first rodeo, held last October, raised $10,000 for Johns Hopkins Children's Center. This year, ABC has designated Kid’s Chance, an organization that provides for the children of parents who were injured on the job, as the official charitable partner of the Equipment Rodeo. Kid’s Chance is also the designated charity for Injured Workers' Insurance Fund. “We felt given the nature of our industry and our long-standing partnership with IWIF that this was a much better fit for our organization,” said Tom Shelton, with RCM&D and chair of the Events Committee. This year the rodeo is scheduled for Saturday, October 13 at Oregon Ridge.
