ABC Captures Awards in Craft Championship
Jos. M. Zimmer and Maryland Mechanical honored

For the fourth straight year, ABC Baltimore's apprenticeship program was honored at the National Craft Championships, held this year in Nashville, TN. David Foehrkolb, a fourth year apprentice with Joseph M. Zimmer, Inc. captured first place in the Plumbing competition. Wayne Becker, of Maryland Mechanical Systems, won second place in the HVAC event. There were more than 150 competitors from all over the country, each representing their respective chapters, for the honor of being named the best in their chosen profession.
"The committee made a concerted effort a few years ago," said ABC's Michelle Butt, "to start improving our performance at the Craft Championships." The results have been nothing but startling. Before the committee embarked on this plan, Baltimore had never earned so much as a third place award. Since that time, however, the chapter has won four straight first place awards; two silvers and a bronze.
Women in ABC Promotes Construction Careers in Construction Targets Girls Schools
In what has to be one of the most unique outreach events ABC has ever attempted, 14 professional women, representing a wide-spectrum of careers in construction, will present to private school sophomore and juniors. On April 5 at Gilman School, on an active construction jobsite, the Women in ABC Committee will host a day-long event promoting career opportunities in construction. The event will be held at the Carey Library. Henry H. Lewis Contractors, LLC, is the general contractor on this project.
Martha Elliott, with CAM Construction Co., Inc. and Vice-Chair of the Women's Commttee added, "As an active member of Women in ABC, and a woman who has enjoyed decades in this industry, it is my duty to introduce the field to as many women as possible and encourage them to at least look to our industry for their career. Our industry needs talented young people to carry on the work we have begun. Unless we begin to educate the parents, students and the educators themselves about the opportunities in our field, we can never expect to be the first choice for students." The assembled group of speakers includes an architect; general contractor; space planner; engineers. Special Secretary Sharon Pinder, with the Governor's Office of Business and Minority Affairs, will be the guest speaker.
